visited skid row today

Post by Somthor » August 28th, 2004, 5:35 pm

I went down to 15th st E in Bradenton today which is the buy here pay here bottom feeder car lot row in manatee county.

You see this one lot had a car i was interested in, I had it checked out and it was reported back to me that it might be a possible gem in a huge pile of shit (the rest of their inventory)

So i went over with the Mazda (new engine now) looked over their car which was at best fair but was rust free 1985 300CD... paint was burnt in a few places seals were good interior was dirty smelled bad and needed a few repairs in the drivers seat.

AC was out commpressor was seized belt had broke it had other problems that I knew to look for, but I also knew while it was currently running a bit rought the tranny shifted good and engine itself was good. all things considered I felt the car was worth about 2k and with about 1k reconditioning i felt Id beable to latter sell it for about 5k and if not It would be a good car for the wife to drive.

they are asking $4,500.00 a quick pointing out of a few of its obiousl faults got the price down to $3,500.00

"hey the AC doesnt seem to work" seller claims its fine i point to the broken belt on the ac compressor and the fact the pulley wont move, oh well you can get one of those for $50.00 he says.... :) a few of those exchanges and we are at $3,500.00. (btw my inspector had already pointed out the ac's compressor was bad to the very same sales person )

the guy says I need to talk to the owner for the trade in so i say ok and leave and call back latter. when i call him I tell him what car im interested in get lied to about the mileage being actual when i already know the Odometer has been broken for quite some time. tell him I had goten a quote of $3,500.00 which he confirmed was the cash price.

so I say Id like to trade in My Mazda 929 which he has never seen and the orginal person I spoke to never looked at. ( I had parked off to the side and the guy never bothered to walk out to look it over.

he says fine Ill take your car (without ever knowing what year or model or condition) and you'll need to give me $3,300.00 cash ...off the books... I told him you told me the car was 3500.00 you are saying my car is only worth $200.00? you dont even know what Ive got....blah blah his car is worth alot its in demand ... I point out that it had been sitting on his lot for the last 60 days or so which is what prompted me to see if it was for parts or not.

no sale was made I simply gave up, now I had hoped to get his for even trade and at worse i was gonna offer him a few hundred extra.

guy can let it sit while it rots away for all I care no one I know would really consider buying that type car from that type lot.

We have a local used car dealer been in the used car business for over 30 years, new car dealer previously. He has a lot of nice used cars and trucks. He doesn't care if he sells them or not. He has had a few people sell for him, but they quit, because he demands that they sell for what he is asking, no dickering and they can't sell cars. So he sells by himself and the vehicles are bumper to bumper three four deep.

These dealers may have a car sales business, but you can't force 'em to sell. Time to move on.

i shudder to think what that car will be like in another 90 days of sitting the vaccum lines are gonna go seals the fuel will gel... already its covered on dust and cobwebs underneath

the paint will go its a nice dark blue you can tell up to recently the car had always been garaged but its starting to turn purple under the florida sun in spots the guy needs to put it in some shade or wax it or somthing
